Do Dental Implants Get Stained Like Real Teeth?

Though they’re not biological, your dental implants can still do many things that your real teeth can do. They can chew food, prevent your jawbone from deteriorating, and unfortunately, if you don’t take proper care of them, they can become stained or discolored like natural teeth do, too. But while with real ones, professional whitening treatments can help restore their luster, once dental implants are stained there’s little that can be done to correct it.

Here’s how to prevent discoloration in your prosthetics and ensure that your new smile stays looking white and bright for as long as possible!

Keep it Clean

The easiest way to guarantee that your dental implants stay looking white and clean for as long as possible is through regular oral hygiene care. Just like your real teeth, your prosthetics need to be brushed twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste and flossed once a day as well. Furthermore, be sure to visit your dentist twice a year for your regular, biannual exam and cleaning appointments.

Though your dental implants resist stains, they are coated with a glaze that keeps them from looking dingy with time. Unfortunately, however, this glaze can become damaged if you aren’t careful, so never use abrasive toothpaste or hard brushes to clean them.

Another area to keep an eye out for is the dental cement that holds your crowns to your dental implant abutments. This cement is porous and can become stained, so brushing and flossing regularly will help keep this material looking its best as well.

Watch What You Eat

An additional way to ensure that your prosthetics stay as white as possible is to avoid eating or drinking anything that could stain a white shirt. Things like coffee, red wine, chocolate, tomato sauce, and even spices like saffron and turmeric can discolor your teeth and possibly your dental implants. While you can still enjoy these items, just be sure to brush and floss well after eating, and if you can’t get to a sink right away, rinse your mouth with a glass of water until you can.

Remember, your dental implants look and function just like real teeth, but they also stain like them, too. Don’t let your prosthetics become dull and dingy due to neglect. Be sure to follow these care instructions for the best results.
