Each year, tens of thousands of workers come to the United States on work visas to provide better opportunities for themselves and their families. Unfortunately, however, sometimes things don’t always go according to plan. Dental emergencies can occur anywhere at any time, but they can be especially stressful when you’re far from home and can’t see your regular dentist. If you are living in the United States for work and have a dental emergency, here’s what you should do to protect yourself and get the help you need in this time of crisis.

Before You Leave…

If you haven’t yet left your home community, schedule an appointment with your local dentist before you go. They can help treat any oral health problems prior to your departure so you can lower your risk of needing urgent care once you arrive.

Furthermore, investigate purchasing travel dental insurance that can be used in case of emergency during your stay. Once you arrive, you can also see if your employer offers any insurance plans based here in the US that you might qualify for.

Pack Your Supplies

When packing your bags, be sure to include your oral hygiene tools including your toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, and oral health appliances such as retainers or bite guards.

Maintain Your Routine

Because you are in a new community, some changes to your routine are expected, but one thing that shouldn’t change is your oral health routine. Be sure to make time to brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once a day, especially if you’ll be enjoying all the wonderful new foods available here in America!

Find a Dentist

Once you arrive, take some time to research local dentists and find one that offers emergency care. While you may not have an emergency right now, knowing where to go in an urgent situation can help alleviate stress if the occasion arises.

Furthermore, familiarize yourself with other local emergency services such as the location of the hospital emergency room just in case you cannot make it to a dentist during regular business hours.

America is the land of opportunity, and we hope that your time here is everything you’ve dreamed it could be. But if a dental emergency strikes during your stay, knowing what to do will help you stay calm and collected and get the help you need without unnecessary delays.
